Composition
Each 10 g powder contains Sulfanilamide BP 10 g.
Pharmacology
Sulfanilamide is a competitive inhibitor of bacterial enzyme dihydropteroate synthetase. This enzyme normally uses Para Amino Benzoic
Acid (PABA) for synthesizing the necessary folic acid. The inhibited reaction is normally necessary in these organisms for the synthesis of
folic acid. Thus Sulfanilamide inhibits microorganism replication.
Indication
It is used as a dusting powder for wounds and infections by topical application. It is also used to treat infections caused by sulfonamide
sensitive organisms, notably streptococcal septicemia & equine pneumonia caused by Streptococci, strangles, joint-ill, and metritis in
animal.
Dosage & administration
Route of administration: Dusting powder apply into the sore.
Animals up to three months of age
Initial dose: 7.5 g/50 kg body weight 2-3 times daily.
Continuation: 2.5 g/50 kg body weight every 8 hours.
Older animals
Initial dose: 10 g/50 kg body weight 2-3 times daily.
Continuation: 5 g/50 kg body weight every 12 hours.
Or, as directed by the Registered Veterinary Physician.
Contraindication
Animal with sulfonamide hypersensitivity should not be treated with sulfonamide topical preparations.
Warning and precaution
Avoid oral administration. Total period of treatment should not exceed seven days. To be kept in a well closed container.
Side effects
Common side effects: Itching, burning sensation, skin rash, redness, swelling etc.
Rare side effects: Not known by topical application.
Use in pregnancy & lactation
In recommended dosage it is safe in pregnancy & lactation. However, risk & necessity should be considered during administration in
pregnant & lactating animal.
Drug interaction
With medicine: Topical Sulfanilamide has no effect with oral or parenteral drugs.
With food & others: No interaction was found with feed.
Overdose
An overdose of topical Sulfanilamide is not expected to be dangerous.
Withdrawal time
Meat & Milk: Not known.
Storage
Store below 30º C temperature and dry place, protected from light. Keep all medicines out of reach of children.
