Composition
Bolus: Each bolus contains Ciprofloxacin Hydrochloride USP equivalent to Ciprofloxacin 1 g.
Injection: Each ml contains Ciprofloxacin Lactate INN equivalent to Ciprofloxacin 50 mg.
Oral Solution: Each ml contains Ciprofloxacin Hydrochloride BP equivalent to Ciprofloxacin 100 mg.
Pharmacology
Ciprofloxacin (Cipro-A Vet®) is a 2nd generation fluoroquinolone antibiotic with broad spectrum bactericidal effects. Ciprofloxacin (Cipro-A Vet®) inhibits bacterial DNA replication by inhibiting bacterial DNA gyrase (Topoisomerase-II) enzyme & thereby kills bacteria.
Indications
Livestock
Ciprofloxacin (Cipro-A Vet®) is indicated for the treatment of diseases caused by both gram-positive & gram-negative bacteria e.g. Actinobacillus, Pasteurella, Streptococcus, E.coli, Bordetella, Salmonella, Mycoplasma etc. in following
infections:
Respiratory tract infection
Urinary tract infection
Gastrointestinal tract infection
Skin & soft tissue infection
Poultry
Ciprofloxacin (Cipro-A Vet®) is indicated for the treatment of diseases caused by both gram-positive & gram-negative bacteria e.g. Colibacillosis, Salmonellosis, Infectious coryza, CRD, Mycoplasmosis, Streptococcosis, Staphylococcosis, Pasteurellosis etc. It is also indicated for the prevention of secondary bacterial infections followed by viral infections, such as- Ranikhet, Gumboro etc.
Fish
Ciprofloxacin (Cipro-A Vet®) is indicated for bacterial (Aeromonas sp. & Pseudomonas sp.) disease of catfish such as stinging catfish, walking catfish etc.
Dose & Administration
Route of administration: Oral/IM/IV.
Bolus: For oral administration only.
Livestock: One bolus/ 75-150 kg body weight (6.7-13.4 mg/ kg body weight) twice daily for 3-5 days.
Poultry: One bolus/ 15-20 liter drinking water for 3-5 days.
Fish: 1-2 bolus/ kg feed for 5-7 days. For Aquaculture pond: 5-7 bolus/ decimal (3 feet depth of water) for 3-4 days.
Injection: For IM/IV administration only.
Livestock: 1 ml/ 10 kg body weight (5 mg/ kg body weight) by IM/IV injection daily for 3-5 days.
Oral solution: For oral administration only.
Poultry: For treatment- 1 ml/ 1-2 liter drinking water for 3-5 days.
For prevention- 1 ml/ 4-8 liter drinking water for 3 days.
Or as directed by the registered Veterinary physician.
Contraindication
Contraindicated in animals or birds hypersensitive to Ciprofloxacin.
Warning & Precaution
Ciprofloxacin has occasionally been reported to cause crystalluria, so animals should not be allowed to become dehydrated during therapy with Ciprofloxacin. Animals or birds with severe renal or hepatic impairment may require dosage adjustment to prevent drug accumulation.
Side effects
Common: Anorexia & Vomiting.
Rare: Hypersensitivity reactions, crystalluria, dizziness & CNS stimulation.
Use in pregnancy & lactation
Ciprofloxacin should not be used in pregnant & lactating cow.
Drug interaction
With medicine: Ciprofloxacin may show synergistic effect with aminoglycosides, 3rd generation cephalosporin & extended spectrum penicillin. Ciprofloxacin may increase theophylline blood levels & warfarin effects. Nitrofurantoin may antagonize the antimicrobial activity of Ciprofloxacin.
With food: Magnesium, Aluminium, Calcium, Iron & Zinc containing products decrease the gastrointestinal absorption of Ciprofloxacin.
Overdose
Administration of overdose for long time causes cartilage abnormalities in young animals e.g. dogs.
Withdrawal Time
Livestock
Bolus: Meat & Milk- Not known.
Injection: Meat- Meat must not be consumed up to 10 days after administration of this medicine.
Milk- Milk must not be consumed up to 5 days after administration of this medicine.
Poultry
Oral Solution: Meat- Meat must not be consumed up to 5 days after administration of this medicine.
Egg- Not known.
Fish
Stop using this drug 4 weeks before slaughtering fish.
Storage
Store below 30˚C temperature & dry place, protected from light.
Keep all medicines out of reach of children.
Packing
Bolus: Each box contains 10x2 boli in blister strip.
Injection: 10 ml, 30 ml & 100 ml Vial.
Oral solution: 100 ml & 500 ml bottle.
