Spectrum of activity:
Megagard is a semi-synthetic derivative of the antibiotic pleuromutilin. It is clinically effective specially against mycoplasmas and a large number of gram-positive as well as some gram-negative organisms. The following organisms show sensitivity to Megagard.
Mycoplasmas: Mycoplasma gallisepticum, M. synoviae, M.
meleagridis, M. hyorhinis, M. hyopneumoniae (syn M. suipneumoniae)
& M. pneumoniae.
Treponema: Treponema hyodysenteriae.
Leptospira: Leptospira spp.
Gram-positive organisms: Staphylococcus spp., Streptococcus spp.,
Clostridium perfringens, Listeria monocytogenes, Erysipelothrix spp. &
Corynebacterium pyogenes
Gram-negative organisms: Pasteurella spp., klebsiella pneumoniae,Haemophilus spp., Fusobacterium necrophorum & some strains of E.coli.
Megagard is well absorbed in the gastrointestinal tract of chickens. After oral administration of Megagard solution therapeutic serum levels are obtained quickly in chickens which depending on the dosage, are effective for 24 hours or longer. Clinical tests confirm that treatment of
poultry with Megagard during the first 3 days of life and subsequently at intervals (see medication program) markedly improves final weight. Megagard treatment given at the same time during vaccination for Marek's disease and or IB has no negative influence on antibody titer and enhances subsequent egg production in replacement pullets.
Indications: Megagard is widely used for prevention and treatment of disease of the respiratory tract caused by mycoplasmas and complicated by secondary bacterial infections in commercial broiler, layer and breeder.
